World Mosquito Day was observed at Vidyodaya Pre-University College in collaboration with the District Government Office, Udupi; Zilla Panchayat, Udupi; District Health and Family Welfare (DHO) Office, Udupi; District Vector-Borne Disease Control Office, Udupi; and the Taluk Health Office, Udupi, on Friday, 21st August 2026, to commemorate Sir Ronald Ross. The programme aimed to spread awareness on “Mosquito Control – Disease-free Living”.
The core objective of the programme was to raise awareness among students about mosquito-borne diseases and preventive measures. The resource persons were Dr. Vasudeva Upadhya, District Vector-Borne Disease Controller, Mr. Hucchesh Naikar, District Health Supervisor, and Mr. Devappa Pathangar, Health Inspector.
The programme began with an invocation by Keerthi S.P. of I PUC, followed by inauguration by the dignitaries.
In his introductory speech, Dr. Vasudeva Upadhya remembered Sir Ronald Ross, who established that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans. He also reminded everyone of the importance of controlling mosquito populations, thereby preventing disease transmission. He discussed the dangers posed by mosquito-borne diseases and the ongoing efforts to combat the world’s deadliest creature.
While briefing the students, Mr. Hucchesh Naikar delivered keynotes on preventing Malaria, Dengue and Chikungunya. He also highlighted core preventive measures like emptying and scrubbing water storage containers weekly; clearing stagnant water from coolers, flower pots and discarded containers; using mosquito nets, window screens and insect repellents; wearing full-sleeved clothing during peak mosquito hours; and promoting early diagnosis and prompt medical treatment for fever.
Another resource person, Mr. Devappa Pathangar, emphasized the challenges in prevention and control efforts. He highlighted the importance of community participation, regular monitoring and coordinated efforts between health departments and local bodies.
In his presidential address, Sri Sandeep Kumar, Principal, Vidyodaya Pre-University College, highlighted the need to recognize the health risks posed by mosquitoes and encouraged actions to reduce their spread.
Smt. Chandrakala, District Health Education Officer, welcomed the gathering, delivered the vote of thanks and also compered the programme.
